This non-invasive exam CT exam may also be called a Heart Scan, a Coronary Calcium Scan, or a Calcium Score. A coronary calcium scan uses computerized tomography (CT) imaging to take pictures of your heart’s arteries to look at how much calcium is in your coronary arteries. Calcium deposits can narrow the arteries and increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. A calcium score test can help your healthcare provider determine if you are at risk for heart disease guide treatment decisions.

The Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Education (SHAPE) and other supporters recommend a coronary calcium score scan because:

  • It has been shown to be five (5) times more accurate than other risk assessment methods at predicting which patients are at risk for coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • Information gained from the calcium score can more accurately identify patients requiring cholesterol-lowering therapy, helping to reduce instances of unnecessary, costly medication.
  • The test can also be used, over time, to effectively measure the response to targeted therapy

Talk with your healthcare provider about your risk factors. Because heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US for both men and women, it is essential that heart health remain a top priority for those who are at risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), which can cause a heart attack if not treated.
