Approximately 20 to 30 percent of women ages 35 to 55 have symptomatic uterine fibroids. The incidence is twice as common among African-American women. Some of the symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, pain during intercourse and lower back pain.
